Abstract - IEEE 802.15.4a Ultra-wideband based wireless positioning has recently gained attention for precise localization. However, the multi-user scalability of those, mostly two-way ranging based, approaches is not considered. Due to the exchange of multiple frames per ranging, two-way ranging has significant downsides in terms of scalability. This paper proposes and validates a novel approach for a multi-user time-difference of arrival based localization system using wireless clock synchronization. The system accuracy is assessed using a complex experiment, covering robotic movement and an optical reference system for comparable results. It is shown, that the accuracies achievable by time-difference of arrival positioning with wireless clock synchronization are comparable to similar two-way ranging based approaches. All raw samples, reference data and processed positions are provided alongside this work.

Abstract — Positioning techniques based on satellite navigation systems are nowadays standard in most commercial vehicles. But standalone receivers are effected by multipath and atmospheric effects and hence their performance may be decreased, especially in challenging environments that directly affects the usage of satellite-based positioning in traffic-relevant and by that safety-critical systems. Therefore, this paper describes, based on an exemplary implementation of an Advanced Software-Defined radio receiver (ASDR) for Global Navigation Satellite Systems, the impact of the direct receiver surrounding as well as a so-called Smart Constellation Selection (SCS) as pre-positioning routine to increase the accuracy by just using already available data at the receiver side. Beneath the implementation of the receiver itself, the functionality and performance of the SCS will be explained. In addition, this contribution contains the introduction of a freely available database with geo-referenced GPS measurements including web-based analysis functionalities to enable other researches to test and evaluate their ideas for future GNSS enhancements.

Abstract — Power systems and especially Smart Grids increasingly apply Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for exchanging information over wide area networks. Here, the performance of the ICT has become crucial for the development of new Wide Area Monitoring, Protection And Control (WAMPAC) systems. In this context, simulations are a common way for evaluation, but power systems and communication networks are usually analysed with dedicated simulators. Therefore a combined simulation for analysing the dynamics and mutual impacts of both domains is needed. In this paper we present a generic hybrid simulation architecture based on the IEEE standard 1516 - High Level Architecture to enable a combined simulation of power systems and communication networks in an integrated simulation environment. First, we introduce our hybrid simulator architecture, along with the communication and synchronization process between sub-simulators. Secondly, we present our communication networks architecture for modelling the network traffic caused by the information transmitted by control and protection algorithms within the electrical transmission system. Finally, we introduce our modelling approach for mapping entities between the power systems and the communication networks. For this purpose, we introduce our concept of a Substation Data Processing Unit, which represents entities on substation level by providing an IEC 61850 based model for mapping logical functions for local process control, implementing decentralized protection and control algorithms and providing additional components for the power systems (e.g Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs)).

In this paper, the authors present a novel solution for the integration of TETRA-based PMR and IP based wireless broadband networks through a novel inter-system interface. This solution enables secure group communications based on PMR standards using heterogeneous devices ranging from a traditional PMR device to smart phones such as the iPhone. Thereby a SmartPhone user will be enabled to leverage on one hand the multimedia data capabilities of 3G und 4G wireless networks (UMTS, LTE) while at the same time be part of a PMR group communication. In other words, any authorized Smart Phone can become part of a PMR communication group by simply downloading the appropriate, dedicated Application. As a key benefit, homeland security personnel can be included in the disaster response actions instantaneously, without necessarily carrying around a dedicated PMR device and without the need for PMR coverage. In contrast to existing solutions, the proposed interface solution prevents the reduction of the voice quality when bridging system boundaries by tandem encoding with a TETRA-over-IP (ToIP) interconnection. The presented solutions include different interconnection setups including Trunked Mode (TMO) and Direct Mode (DMO) capabilities. To enable the group communications services as known in PMR systems, a dedicated protocol, the Push-to-X protocol developed by CNI, is leveraged. The results of performance evaluations show that the speech quality is still acceptable even under harsh conditions. The proposed system therefore paves the way towards a future, high performance PMR based on LTE, while preserving backwards compatibility with existing PMR systems.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) enable the in-depth reconnaissance and surveillance of major incidents. Uncontrolled emissions of liquid or gaseous contaminants in cases of volcanic eruptions, large fires, industrial incidents or terrorist attacks can be analyzed by utilizing UAVs. Hence, the use of cognitive Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) for distributing mobile sensors in incident areas is in general a significant value add for remote sensing, reconnaissance, surveillance and communication purposes. Police departments, fire brigades and other homeland security organizations will have access to medium and small size UAVs in the near future and will integrate UAVs in their work flow. In this paper we are focusing on the civilian concepts of operations (CONOPS) for UAVs, in particular for small-scale UAVs. We present viable concepts on system level for leveraging public wireless communication networks for UAV-based sensor networks with respect to existing constraints and user requirements.

Safety critical applications of IEEE 802.15.4 networks require autonomous network reconfiguration and dynamic meshing in case of node failures or changing environmental influences. In contrast to the classical approach of wireless sensor networks, this paper focuses on the development of enhanced network services like multimedia transmissions in a gas concentration monitoring scenario. Thus, using IEEE 802.15.4 reduces the energy consumption in comparison to Wi-Fi networks. Therefore, this paper demonstrates the application of Ad-hoc On Demand Distance Vector (AODV) and Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) on IEEE 802.15.4 nodes based on an IP layer - instead of relying on the standard ZigBee configuration. The new network configuration is evaluated for handover processes between mobile and stationary nodes. The time delay, maximum throughput and generated overhead is compared between the two routing protocols for different node constellations. Finally, the lifetime of the node is evaluated in comparison to the ordinary IEEE 802.15.4 configuration and IEEE 802.11. Concluding, the application of AODV and OLSR for power-constrained IEEE 802.15.4 nodes is proposed.

The fast access of essential and latest information from anytime and anywhere is crucial for the success of fire mission planning and is still a challenge, if requirements such as high performance, security and simplicity have to be met concurrently. However, the secure access to the distributed information of public authorities like building plans or medical patient data is currently mostly available via the traditional time-consuming post. Due to this problem a mobile integrated solution is developed, which allows a secure and holistic access to relevant information. The solution is based on the Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) architecture which specifies an XML based standard for exchanging authentication and authorization data. Unfortunately, the performance of this approach is not applicable for time-critical mobile applications because of the SAML specific communication procedures. Thus, this paper presents two approaches for boosting the performance and shows the results of performance evaluation for the required validation. Moreover, an analytic model is introduced for identifying the SAML specific processing time.

The paper describes a map generation system which relies on random individual contributions of GPS traced movements. In a typical use case, mobile phone users would join a specific community to contribute their movements along streets, roads or pathways in form of so called traces. Neither contributing subscribers nor the map generation need to have an a priori knowledge of the charted area. The approach presented here comprises the trace recording, the upload process to a common server and the processing algorithm for map generation. The problem of noisy data, resulting from GPS inaccuracies and random movements is addressed and countermeasures are proposed. One major perspective of this paper is the decomposition of a map into reasonable segments. In this context, the filter mechanism applied to the raw data is a key component for the deduction of precise street maps. Furthermore, the proof of concept is given and a guideline for a lower limit of active subscribers to achieve an operational system is derived.

2016 - Förderpreis Dr.-Ing. Christoph Ide

Herr Dr.-Ing. Christoph Ide, ehemaliger Forschungsgruppenleiter des CNI und Alumni des SFB 876, erhielt im November 2016 für seine Dissertation "Resource-Efficient LTE Machine-Type Communication in Vehicular Environments" einen der renommierten Nachwuchspreise der Informationstechnischen Gesellschaft (ITG) der im VDE. Der auf nationaler Ebene im starken Wettbewerb vergebene Preis wurde am 29.11.2016 in einer feierlichen Veranstaltung in der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Berlin übergeben. Die im Rahmen des DFG Sonderforschungsbereichs SFB 876 „Datenanalyse unter Ressourcenbeschränkungen“ erarbeiteten Ergebnisse liefern herausragende Beiträge für den Entwurf zukünftiger, mobilfunkgestützter Verkehrssysteme, die eine zunehmende Automatisierung auf die zuverlässige und gleichzeitig effiziente Kommunikation der Systemkomponenten untereinander abstützen werden. Die Arbeit leistet auch wertvolle Beiträge für zukünftige 5G-Netze, insbesondere auch für das Internet of Things.

2013 ITG-Preise 2013 für Dr.-Ing. Niklas Goddemeier, Dr.-Ing. Kai Daniel und Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Wietfeld

Für ihre Forschungsarbeiten im Bereich der vernetzten Robotiksysteme erhielten Dr.-Ing. Niklas Goddemeier, Dr.-Ing. Kai Daniel und Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Wietfeld am 12.11.2013 in der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Berlin die begehrten ITG-Preise 2013 der Informationstechnischen Gesellschaft im VDE.

Der ITG-Preis wird jährlich bundesweit ausgeschrieben und für herausragende Veröffentlichungen verliehen, in diesem Fall für einen Beitrag zum international renommierten IEEE Journal on Selected Areas of Communications.

Role-Based Connectivity Management with Realistic Air-to-Ground Channels for Cooperative UAVs: Ad-hoc aerial sensor networks leveraging MUAVs (Micro Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) are ideally suited to cost-efficiently explore unknown or hostile environments for example in case of incidents producing harmful gases or radiation. In this manuscript we present results on the investigations of communication-aware steering algorithms for cooperative MUAV swarms. The mission objective is to achieve a maximum spatial exploration efficiency with the simultaneous ability to self-optimize the communication links by exploiting controlled mobility. While our previous work has mainly considered the performance of the Air-to-Air mesh network, in this paper we focus on the Air-to-Ground-link connectivity control. To achieve appropriate communication links to a central sensor data sink even while exploring larger search areas, an agent-based role management strategy is used to provide suitable multi-hop connectivity. The novel algorithms are investigated for static as well as dynamically changing environments. Key results include a detailed realistic aerial channel characterization and network dimensioning analysis considering numbers of MUAVs and density of ground stations vs. exploration speed and sensor data latency.

2014 VDE-Preis für Master-Absolventen - M.Sc. David Öhmann

Alljährlich vergibt der VDE Rhein-Ruhr e.V. den Preis für herausragende Bachelor- und Masterabschlüsse an Nachwuchsingenieure. Auch in diesem Jahr zeichnete der Verband wieder hervorragende Studienabschlüsse aus und setzte damit sein aktives Engagement für Jung-Ingenieure fort. Die feierliche Preisverleihung fand erstmalig im Rahmen der Messe „E-World“ in Essen am 12. Februar 2014 statt. Für die TU Dortmund wurde David Öhmann ausgezeichnet, dessen in Zusammenarbeit mit BMW, München, durchgeführten Masterarbeit "Kooperatives Verbindungsmanagement von heterogenen Funkzugangssystemen im Automobilumfeld" durch das CNI betreut wurde.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an access method for accessing a protected communication service (4) via a public communication network (3) by means of a secure communication network (2), whereby the secure communication network (2) is based on user groups (21), comprising the steps of defining an access group having access to the communication service (4) based on the user groups (21) of the secure communication network (2), generating a group key for all members of the access group, providing the group key to a member of the access group via the secure communication network (2), and accessing the communication service (4) via the public communication network (3) using the group key. The present invention further relates to a communication system (1) comprising a secure communication network (2) based on user groups (21), a public communication network (3), a protected communication service (4), and an access server (5) for managing access rights to the communication service (4), whereby the communication system (1) is adapted to execute the above method.

The at least one marking module comprises a marking module transmission unit configured to emit electromagnetic signals, and a motion detector configured to detect a motion. The at least one marking module is configured to emit presence signals as the electromagnetic signals when a motion is detected. The warning module comprises a reception unit configured to receive the electromagnetic signals emitted by the at least one marking module, and an output device configured to emit an approach warning. The warning module is configured to emit the approach warning via the output device dependent on a reception of the presence signals emitted by the at least one marking module.

 

 

SIEGER DES TECHNOLOGIE-WETTBEWERBES "E-ENERGY":

E-Energy

Im "E-Energy"-Technologiewettbewerb des Bundesministeriums für Wirtschaft und Technologie (BMWi) im März 2008 wurde unser Projekt E-DeMa, welches sich mit der Entwicklung und Demonstration dezentral vernetzter Energiesysteme hin zum E-Energy Marktplatz der Zukunft beschäftigt, als Sieger ausgezeichnet. E-DeMa ist eines von sechs Projekten des Forschungsprogramms „E-Energy“. Unter dem Dach von „E-Energy“ werden Verfahren, Dienstleistungen und Produkte entwickelt, um das Elektrizitätssystem intelligent kontrollieren, steuern und regeln zu können – sozusagen ein „Internet der Energie“. Die im Rahmen der E-Energy-Forschungsprojekte entwickelten Lösungen werden in ausgewählten Modellregionen erprobt. Dafür stehen den Regionen aus Eigenmitteln und staatlicher Förderung 140 Mio. Euro zur Verfügung.

 

 

PREISTRÄGER DES FÖRDERWETTBEWERBES "SIMOBIT":

Im Rahmen des Förderwettbewerbes SimoBIT wurde unser Projekt Mobis Pro (Mobiles Informationssystem zur Prozessoptimierung in Feuerwehren und öffentlichen Verwaltungen) vom Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie (BMWi) im November 2006 als Preisträger ausgezeichnet. Mehr als 100 Projektvorschlägen wurden bei dem Wettbewerb eingereicht.

 

 

GEWINNER-TEAM DES ROHDE&SCHWARZ BUNDESWEITEN FALLSTUDIENWETTBEWERBES "HDTV - GET IT NOW!":

Der Preis des Rohde&Schwarz bundesweiten Fallstudienwettbewerbes 2006 "HDTV - get it now!" ging an unser Team aufgrund der hervorragenden Bearbeitung des Themas "die Zukunft des hochauflösenden Fernsehens und deren Bereitstellung über DVB-Systeme". Über 120 Studierende von elf deutschen Universitäten nahmen an dem Wettbewerb teil.
