PG WS1617 - Testbed for ICT-Based Smart Grid Applications

Many studies have been conducted to address the arising challenges of next generation electric power systems. For overcoming these challenges, the literature proposes a vast range of “smart grid” concepts utilizing modern power system assets in combination with fast, reliable and secure ICT infrastructures. However, especially smart grid applications having a significant influence on system security need to be thoroughly evaluated and validated before deployed in practice. This presents a true engineering challenge because the interactions within modern cyber-physical energy systems – in particular between power system and ICT domains but also possibly including gas, heat, smart markets etc. – are very complex and require sophisticated simulation and modeling tools.


This project group develops a hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) testbed for the evaluation of ICT-based Smart Grid applications. Therefore, a virtual smart substation is going to be implemented as hardware. It comprises a real-time power system simulator (OPAL-RT), modern measurement technology (Phasor Measurement Unit PMU) and various smart grid functions implemented upon a virtualized execution platform (CPS-Xen). For the assessment of the virtualized communication infrastructure, the SDN4SmartGrids Testbed is available.

This interdisciplinary project group is a cooperation between the Institute of Energy Systems, Energy Efficiency and Energy Economics (Prof. Rehtanz), the Communication Networks Institute (Prof. Wietfeld) and the Embedded System Software Group (Prof. Spinczyk).

  • Real-Time Power System Simulation
  • Measurement Acquisition
  • Data Transfer via IEC 61850
  • ICT Performance Evaluation with the SDN4SmartGrids Testbed
  • Implementation of Smart Grid functions with software based IEDs
  • Modeling of Wide Area Smart Grid Communication Networks

A mix of students with focus on power engineering, communication networks and automation & robotics is envisaged.
