CNI at High-profile Event on NRW's Digitalization Strategy

02.11.2018 – CNI has been invited to present its latest 5G research results at the Digitalkonferenz.NRW. Following the invitation of Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet and Minister of Economics and Digital Affairs Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart, over 500 guests from politics, business, science, culture and society came together to discuss the digital strategy for North Rhine-Westphalia with the state government on October 26, 2018.

At our booth we presented a 5G mmWave antenna tracking system, implementing a mmWave link at 28 GHz between a fixed base station equipped with a highly directional and electrically steerable pencil beam antenna and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). Beamforming and pencil beam antennas are expected to become a major component of 5G mmWave New Radio networks. While spatial separation and high gains are anticipated benefits, the suitability of those new antenna types in highly dynamic scenarios, such as the use on UAVs, requires appropriate real–time steering capabilities and needs to be proven in practice. In our testbed, a rail system is customized to generate precisely reproducible mobility trajectories of the UAV. In case the antennas are aligned within a given error margin, a stable air–to–ground highspeed connection (up to 3 Gbps) can be observed during the flight experiments.

 

TU Dortmund's CNI contributes to the establishment of the German Centre for Rescue Robotics in Dortmund

28.10.2018 – On October 1, 2018, a new project has started - funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) - which aims to establish a national competence center for rescue robotics. For the first time in Germany, first responders, researchers and industry will work closely together to realize autonomous rescue robots, which will become part of national as well as international robotic task forces for emergency rescue operations. Additionally, new test procedures will be developed, which will form the basis for standardization and certification of different robot systems acting outdoor on the ground, in the air, in water, as well as indoor. Based on its long-term track record in this research area, the Communication Networks Institute (CNI) will lead the work related to robust wireless communications of robotic systems, which allow for reliable operation even in challenging conditions of rescue operations

 

Excellent Paper Award at International Conference for 5G Edge Clouds

18.10.2018 – We are delighted to announce that the contribution “Evaluating Software-Defined Networking-Driven Edge Clouds for 5G Critical Communications”, by Fabian Kurtz, Igor Laukhin, Caner Bektas and Christian Wietfeld, was awarded as Excellent Paper at the 9th International Conference on ICT Convergence (ICTC) 2018. The flagship conference of the Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, co-sponsored by the IEEE, took place in October in Jeju, South Korea. Within the context of the BMBF funded Franco-German project BERCOM (Blueprint for Pan-European Resilient Critical Infrastructures based on LTE Communications), the research discussed in the paper demonstrated the advantages of Edge Clouds in the scope of 5G critical infrastructure communications.

 

Dissertation on Software-Defined Networking for Energy Systems successfully completed

08.10.2018 – The CNI team is happy to announce that Nils Dorsch has successfully defended his dissertation on October 2, 2018. The dissertation titled "Software-Defined Networking (SDN) for Real-Time Capable, Reliable and Cost-Efficient Smart Grid Communication Infrastructures" has proposed and investigated innovative concepts for communication networks suitable for the so-called Smart Grid. The work has been carried out within the interdisciplinary DFG-funded research group 1511 on "Control and protection systems for the future energy system". Dr. Dorsch has proposed a dedicated SDN interface which enables energy system operators to control the underlying communication system through a so-called north-bound interface. These extension of the Floodlight SDN controller originally developed at Stanford University have been also made available as open source. As a unique solution approach, Nils Dorsch has integrated the Network Calculus method into the real-time SDN controller to ensure that the maximum delay bounds required by the energy system are met. The work of Nils Dorsch has attracted considerable attention: a first paper describing the overall system concept has been cited over 50 times since its publication in 2014 at the IEEE SmartGridComm conference. An analysis of the economic impact of SDN-based networks has been recently published as journal article in NETNOMICS (Springer). Another journal article on "Enabling Hard Service Guarantees in Software-Defined Smart Grid Infrastructures" is accepted to appear in Computer Networks (Elsevier).

 

IEEE Student Fellowship for Outstanding Contributions to Machine Learning in Communications based on research in DFG SFB 876

11.09.2018 – We are very happy to announce that Benjamin Sliwa has received the 2018 Transportation Electronics Fellowship Award "For Outstanding Student Research Contributions to Machine Learning in Vehicular Communications and Intelligent Transportation Systems" of the Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) within the IEEE, which grants two student fellowships per year worldwide. The bestowal took place at the IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC) Fall 2018, in August in Chicago, USA, which is the flagship conference of the VTS. Within his research in project B4 "Analysis and Communication for Dynamic Traffic Prognosis" of the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB 876), Benjamin Sliwa has presented pioneering work in using machine learning for resource-efficient data transmissions within cellular vehicular networks.

 

Students, who visited CNI-lecture "Betriebswirtschaftliche Grundlagen der IKT", win Thyssenkrupp Manager Cup

16.07.2018 – Congratulations to the team of the IKT- and ET/IT-students Melina Geis, Thorsten Röper, Christoph Schmickler and Timo Sievernich (see photo), who have won this year's Thyssenkrupp Manager Cup. Once in a year, teams - consisting of students of TU Dortmund, FH Dortmund and the International School of Management (ISM) - compete in a corporate strategic planning simulation and try to gain additional market shares as rival companies. The winning team visited the Communication Networks Institute's lecture "Betriebswirtschaftliche Grundlagen der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik (BGIKT)" as recently as last year. As an obligatory subject for the IKT-Bachelor's Degree (and as an elective subject for the course of studies in ET/IT), the specially tailored proposal of lectures rounds out the students' technic-scholarly qualification. The IKT-Bachelor's Degree prepares students extraordinarily to actively participate in our society's digitalization and contains a lot of practice, such as the preparation of an own business plan for a potential start-up.

 

IEEE Best Student Paper Award at Vehicular Technology Conference in Porto

14.07.2018 – We are very happy that Benjamin Sliwa has received the Best Student Paper award of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC) Spring-2018, which took place in June in Porto, Portugal (see photo). The VTC is the flagship conference of the Vehicular Technology Society within the IEEE and is typically attended by approx. 600 international scientists with a focus on wireless and mobile communications. The contribution "Efficient Machine-type Communication using Multi-metric Context-awareness for Cars used as Mobile Sensors in Upcoming 5G Network" has been co-authored by further CNI members Robert Falkenberg, Johannes Pillmann and Christian Wietfeld jointly with Thomas Liebig from the Computer Science department. It was selected from over 200 papers of the conference with PhD students as first author. The paper reports on key results of the research of the projects B4 "Analysis and Communication for Dynamic Traffic Prognosis" and A4 "Resource efficient and distributed platforms for integrative data analysis" within the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB 876). The results of the paper demonstrate the significant potential of machine-learning for the optimization of mobile networks.

 

New VDE ITG discussion paper "Offenes Internet in Deutschland - Eine Bestandsaufnahme"

14.07.2018 – 16 experts of the field of science and industry - among them, also head of the CNI Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Wietfeld - have published a discussion paper dealing with questions all about the open internet and the advancement of network neutrality in Germany. Head of the ITG Prof. Dr.-Ing Hans Schotten gives a classification (translated from German): "Recommendations, which technical boundary conditions have to be kept in mind concerning the advancement of network neutrality, are given. The intention of this is to ensure the essential goal of a transparent network access free from discrimination, on the one hand, but then also to be able to support services having high demands towards data transmission quality. Since the idea of static defined special services, for which exceptions are accepted, could impede innovations, intelligent dynamic mechanisms, that allow the different demands towards the 'open internet' to be realized simultaneously and as conflict-free as possible, are needed. The discussion paper gives an excellent contribution by presenting technical opportunities for action to the social discussion."

 

BMBF State Secretary Rachel catches up on the LARUS-Project

20.06.2018 – At the BMBF-Innovationsforum "Zivile Sicherheit", which took place on June 19 and 20, 2018 in Berlin, the joint research project LARUS, which is coordinated by the Communication Networks Institute, was presented by the project coordinator Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Wietfeld in the session "Robotiksysteme für das Rettungswesen". At the same time, this was an opportunity to present the project to the parliamentary BMBF State Secretary Thomas Rachel personally.
In a tweet by the BMBF, that has been written at the booth of the LARUS-Project, the project is described as an extraordinary leading example for the practical utility of civil security research. LARUS investigates a flight robotics system for the automatic finding of missing persons at sea. In October 2019, the overall system shall be presented at the Baltic Sea.

 

The AirBox project visited Communication Networks Institute (CNI), TU Dortmund

15.06.2018 – Dr. Ling-Jyh Chen, the key Principle Investigator of the AirBox Open Source Project in Taiwan, visited Communication Networks Institute (CNI), TU Dortmund on 15 June. He is the Director of Department of Information Technology Services of Academia Sinica. His most recent project is the “AirBox project", which is based in Taiwan and operated in a grassroots fashion with more than 4,000 deployments across 37 countries till March 2018. The project enables PM2.5 monitoring at a finer spatio-temporal granularity and enriches environmental data analysis by making all measurement data freely available for everyone. The data portal of this project has become the most popular data source about PM2.5 distributions in Taiwan. This project also inspires citizen science in which industrial and academic participants are making contributions to the open-source participatory ecosystem for PM2.5 monitoring.

 

5G Mobile Communications Lab at CPS.HUB/NRW Conference „Zukunft der Mobilität: Zwischen Datenschutz und Datenauswertung"

28.05.2018 – Together with the Wirtschaftsförderung Dortmund, CPS.HUB/NRW has hosted the conference "Das nächste Level der Mobilität – Automatisierung, multimodale Services und die Rolle von Daten", at which internationally well-known scientists discuss the future of mobility. Among presentations by Prof. Dr. Fosca Gianotti of the KDD Lab in Pisa and Prof. Dr. Dimitrios Gunopulos of the University of Athens, there were also leading German scientists, who attended the conference, such as Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik. For the first time, as part of the associated exhibition, because of a recently purchased special vehicle of the Communication Networks Institute of TU Dortmund, the institute's powerful mmWave 5G New Radio test route could be brought into service in a field experiment. Due to the mobile 5G laboratory environment, with the aid of so-called Pencil Beams, it is possible to establish strongly directed communication links, which enable a data transmission rate from up to 2,8Gbit/s and therefore exceed current 4G systems in many respects. The usage of this 5G New Radio Hardware, that is not to be found at the market by now, enables the institute to actively work on the development of communication technologies of the future.

 

Sucessful Initiation of Unmanned Aerial Systems for the Support of See Rescue Operations

26.04.2018 – In the case of the detection and rescue of shipwrecked people, every minute counts. Often, the voice-radio-based distress message is imprecise and does not contain all the necessary information for an efficient local rescue operation. This is exactly the point where the research project "LARUS - Lageunterstützung bei Seenoteinsätzen durch unbemannte Luftfahrtsysteme" begins. With the aid of a multisensor-platform in the shape of an autonomous flight system, the detection and rescue of the victims shall take place faster and more efficiently in the future. This was imposingly presented at an airfield in Rotenburg (Wümme) in front of an interested and impressed public. Here, the roundabout 30 guests had the chance to see the flight system in action and were presented with the project's innovations by understandable demonstrative superstructures by the consortium and detailed explanations.

 

Invited IEEE guest editorials related to electrical vehicle and rescue robotics research

23.01.2018 – Followed by a talk on a panel of the most recent IEEE Conference on Standards in Communications in Helsinki in September 2017, Prof. Wietfeld was recently invited to contribute two guest articles to IEEE e-publications. The most recent Newsletter of the IEEE Vehicular Society (VTS) features a short article on the relation of "Electric Vehicles and the Smart Power Grid", The article stresses the need for interoperability of E-Vehicle charging processes and reports on the contributions of CNI in this area. In the recent edition of the IEEE Standards E-Magazine, Prof. Wietfeld discusses "Networked Rescue Robots: Standards Pave the Way From Prototypes to Deployments". Since 25 years, Prof. Wietfeld has contributed to various international standards in the areas of road transport telematics, cellular networks, mobile Internet and most recently Cyber Physical Systems.
