Due to the liberalization of electricity markets and the increasing use of renewable energies, European electric transmission grids are operated closer to their limits. To ensure safety and reliability of operation under these stringent requirements, the DFG research group 1511 at the Technical University of Dortmund explores innovative protection and process control applications, in particular to avoid large-scale system failures (blackouts).

Project duration: 01.09.2014 - 30.09.2018

This research group aims at developing a coherent, wide area solution for system monitoring and protection of electrical energy systems, ranging from new algorithms to innovative information and communication technology implementations. Protection and control functions for generation-grid-configurations, transmission corridors and coordinated power flow control arise from this interdisciplinary research of nine institutes from electrical engineering, information technology, computer science and statistics.

In a joint effort, a novel, hybrid simulation approach for power and ICT systems is developed, which is employed to examine and validate individual concepts in a holistic manner, using realistic generation and transmission scenarios.

Work package 1 analyzes and optimizes the hybrid simulation environment for power grids and communication networks. The co-simulation platform INSPIRE (Integrated Co-Simulation of Power and ICT Systems for Real-Time Evaluation), implemented during phase one of the research group, provides a basis for validating applications, developed by other work packages.

Measures of decentralized grid control on basis of a multi agent system are evaluated in work package 3. In this course the Communication Networks Institute (CNI) engages in the design and analysis of efficient, load reducing networking concepts for inter agent communication, considering Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements.

Work package 6 deals with fault tolerant and real-time capable execution and communication platforms in order to guarantee realiable operation of the power grid. With regard to communication networks, it is focussed on the application of Software-Defined Networking (SDN).
